Syrian refugees and The Average Face, oct 2015

Faces with average features are found to be more attractive, some research shows. In the public debate about the intake of Syrian refugees one finds a similar attraction of the average. Proponents and opponents of refugee intake try to strengthen arguments with average numbers. Reason for Dutch artist Jeroen van der Most to analyse international refugee influx data and visualise the average effects of expected refugee inflow numbers in the near future. See how refugees will affect the average face in several countries and notice the international differences.

Artist Jeroen van der Most about this experiment:

'I used Google image search to collect large volumes of images of faces. With facial recognition algorithms and average calculations I extracted the average faces from the images. Based on refugee data and extrapolation techniques I visualised the effect of potential refugee inflow per country and different inflow scenarios.'
